First Day!

I've only been here for two hours, but I already feel right at home at my internship with my local newspaper, The Yancey Common Times Journal.

I was originally going to take a multimedia internship with The Asheville Citizen-Times, a paper in Asheville, North Carolina. But I'm from a small town 45 minutes away, and with driving back and forth 12 times a week (they wanted me to work six days), I just decided it wasn't financially feasible for me to do all of that driving and putting in long hours without any income.

So I spoke to the editor of my local paper, and she was so kind as to offer me an internship here. Turns out, I made a very good decision. At the Times, they wanted me to work mostly on online content, taking pictures and putting them in galleries and uploading video. But my passion for journalism is really with writing.

At the Journal, I'm going to get to do plenty of that, as well as get my hands dirty with a little editing experience. In fact, I've already edited one story and written another one just this morning, so I think I'm off to a good start.

I think this is also going to be good because I've lived in Burnsville my whole life. It's your typical very small town, where everybody knows everybody, so I'm very familiar with the people here.

Overall, I think I made the right decision. Though my local paper is a much smaller publication, it's going to allow me to get more experience in the field I want to pursue. I even got my own desk. :) I'm the only intern here as of right now, so that means I'll be getting extra attention from the editor and veteran writers.

Happy Friday!
