It's Fun To Be (at) Seventeen!

Hey CAFME,

I’m Carolann and I just graduated (sort of) from the journalism school with a concentration in graphic design. I say sort of because I delayed my graduation to August so that I could get one of the awesome credit-only internships at a national magazine this summer, and fortunately landed a graphic design internship in the promotions department at Seventeen. Yesterday was my first day, so I thought this would be a good time to post about how I got the internship and what my first day on the job was like.

First, I’d like to encourage everyone to apply for internships/jobs where you have no connections! I got pretty discouraged when I heard how small of an industry magazines is and that they always hire from within, but I applied to this one online and got it by the end of that week with just a phone interview, so it does happen! I think a big reason why I got it had to do with the fact that it wasn’t posted on Ed2010.com, so everyone and their mother wasn’t applying for it. This one was actually posted on westovermedia.com, so check that site out if you’re interested in the marketing side of magazines.

My first day started out very stressfully. I set two alarms on my phone for hour and a half before I had to be there at 9:30, and freaked when I woke up at 9:23 and realized my phone had frozen during the night. Luckily my supervisor was really sweet and the atmosphere here is pretty laid-back so it wasn’t a big deal, but now I know to have a backup alarm. When I got there, I discovered that I even get my own desk and computer, and already had an assignment to create a digital flyer for the Seventeen Style Pros facebook page. I also met the other interns in my department, who were super friendly and will be fun to work with this summer. Now, I’m just excited to see what the rest of the summer has in store for me and to explore the rest of New York! Happy interning everyone!
