Well, it’s over. My two and half months at Carolina Union Design and Southern Weddings is over. For my first internships, I feel so grateful to have met two groups of people who are fun to work with, supportive, and patient. I came in to these two internships with minimal expectations, had days of insecurity, had a couple of “aha” moments, and in the end, walked away feeling pretty good about this summer.
Looking back at the past few months, the one thing I came away with on top of everything else was this: Take advantage of opportunities and make more opportunities.
On a whim (and some last-minute determination to finally do something and get out of my room) I decided to go to the CAFME meeting where Lara Casey from Southern Weddings would be speaking. It had been on my calendar for weeks, but I knew that I would have a long day and would end up talking myself out of going to yet another meeting that week. But I went anyway. And I had the opportunity to talk to Lara one-on-one for a few minutes and build a foundation for a relationship. It led to my internship this summer with Southern Weddings which has given me numerous opportunities to learn much more than just graphic design, but photography, social media, and appealing to an audience.
While trying to get a part-time job in addition to the SW internship, I came across Carolina Union Design Services and applied to be a part of their team. They offered me an internship, instead. And although it would have been nice to find a paying job for the summer, Design Services has taught me more about designing with a critical eye than I could have learned from a classroom. I had designs that would actually be produced and seen and edits that were necessary rather than theoretical.
This summer has been invaluable to me and it was great to share my experience with CAFME’s Intern Diaries this summer! I hope I could pass along some words of wisdom!
