Since my last blog post I have:
- Helped put together a huge (and gorgeous) Indian wedding.
- Helped put together an outdoor wedding (in hot, steamy June...but it was worth it because it was also gorgeous).
- Done countless crafts and cut countless yards of fabric.
- Been to Michael’s 5 times in one week. (Okay, two of those trips were just for my own fun.)
- Submitted an idea for Fall Fest (Now I get to make a button for it!).
- Made moving announcement fliers/coupons and stuffed them into 90 envelopes.
- Started working on Where’s Waldo at Carolina buttons, too.
…among other things.
All of this means that I learned a few of things:
- Even if you’re a journalism major, math is still important. (How many yards of fabric should you get if you need to cut 200 5 inch by 10 inch squares? What is 2 and five-eights in decimal form? Also, my dislike of icing + Katharine’s love of sugary stuff = efficient cake-eaters.)
- Twitter is important. It is also how I became charged with the task of cleaning out Southern Wedding’s office closet. I love organizing and cleaning things, and I really like office supplies, as posted to my Twitter. So when Lara Casey read up on me, it was a match made in heaven. Plus, Southern Weddings has a lot of really awesome random wedding stuff back there.
- Follow your instincts. When I was working on a flier/coupon for Carolina Union Design Services, I tossed away a few ideas that I thought might work better because that wasn’t what my supervisor envisioned. But when she came to look over what I had done, she suggested I make the change that I had ignored in the first place. Conclusion: You’ll save time and look better if you follow your instincts. There’s a reason you got the internship in the first place, right?
- The inspirational bucket of candy does run low. So bring reinforcements.
- Embrace crafts.
- Be yourself. People want to feel comfortable working with you and vice versa. Plus it just makes life easier. (Remind you of this?)
