Back in Action

Finally back at my internship today!

A few weeks ago, one of my very first assignments was to work with my former high school on the graduation insert.

The Yancey Common Times Journal runs once a week, and it comes out on Wednesdays. Graduation is tonight, so the pullout came with this weeks paper.

When I began working on the assignment, I was emailed a list of names of graduating seniors from the high school, so I worked on gathering photos of these students to run.

Today I came in as my co workers were fielding angry phone calls from the high school and parents of children who were left out of the insert. Uh oh. After cross-checking my list, we had everyone they told us would be graduating. But the high school told the parents it was our fault their children were left out. Not exactly.

So I ran out to the high school and got everything fixed, and the kids will be in the paper next week.

Then we get another phone call, and on the day of graduation, they've decided that there are going to be TWO valedictorians and a completely different salutatorian. After we have already run the names and pictures of the original two. So we have to fix that as well.

It's a shame these kids were left out. One even called us crying. But it's all good experience though.

Moral of the story: Always double check everything with more than one person (graduation list), and always learn from every mistake, whether they are your own or someone else's.

On a much happier note, I got to take pictures at the "Evening of Excellence," where they give out scholarship awards. I've never taken photos before except for my own amusement. They were in the pullout with my by line.

That was exciting, and I discovered another aspect of journalism that I like!!
