Life at BooneOakley: First Week Experiences

Hey Cafme!

I'm Chelsea Lowell, a rising senior and advertising major in the journalism school. I have just begun my summer internship at BooneOakley, an advertising agency in Charlotte.  You may know BooneOakley for their BoJangles’ ads, notably “It’s Bo Time!” Many of my co-workers at BooneOakley are Carolina alumni. The founders of BooneOakley, John Boone and David Oakley, both of whom attended UNC.

As I’m sure you know, networking is critical in the world of advertising and PR, much like any other industry. One of my friends in the journalism school interned with BooneOakley last year and loved her experience. She met me for coffee and gave me the name of someone to contact at BooneOakley, as well as advice on landing an internship with the agency. I think that sometimes we forget our peers can be great networking contacts, too!

I am having so much fun here so far! Agency life is much different than any of the previous experiences I have had.  I have to get all my work done, but I can leave for lunch whenever I want and take breaks if needed. BooneOakley has a ping-pong table and a pinball machine that my co-workers and I use frequently. Many people bring their dogs to work too! There is a particularly cute pug dog that is here every day.

At first, I didn’t know if I could leave for lunch or even when to leave at the end of the day.  Finally, one of my co-workers told me, “There are no rules here!”  Also, don’t make the same mistake I did: If you work in an agency, call your co-workers and bosses by their first name. I called my boss “Mr. _______” because I thought it was polite but instead he was offended.

I’m excited to see what my summer project will be.  The other interns and I will receive an account to handle in the next week or so. I’ll keep you posted Cafme readers!
