Hi everyone! I'm Meghan DeMaria, a junior at UNC.
For the last two weeks of summer, I did a trial internship at Girls' Life magazine. I'd taken summer classes in June and July and wanted to gain magazine experience for the fall semester. I had no idea what to expect since I've never interned at a magazine before, but Cafme vice president and former Girls' Life intern Alyssa told me not to worry (and answered my many questions about lunch, the dress code, etc.).
On my first day at GL, I was assigned a post for the "Guys" section of their website. I couldn't believe I was writing on the first day! Even though I was only there for two weeks, I actually got to write three more posts, which have all been published. I also spent two half-days moderating comments on the site and responding to girls' questions, which was fun. The best part of the internship was that I got to sit in on an editorial meeting led by the founding editor, Karen Bokram! The other staff members all gave feedback on which cover image should be used and beauty ideas for the site, and I loved seeing them work together firsthand.
Most of my time at GL, though, was spent in the closet - I learned that you have to be really specific about colors and fabrics when taking inventory! It was fun to see all of the clothes, but working in the closet made me realize that I definitely want to work in the editorial side of magazines and not the fashion department.
My trial internship at GL gave me portfolio clips and experience to help me gain a summer internship in 2012, whether at GL or another magazine. I also have the option of working at GL over winter break, which would be really neat. Everyone there was really friendly, and it was a great introduction into magazine life and being an intern.
