Today was my last day as an intern at National Geographic Channels. I went up to the third floor, walked through the frosted glass doors and over to my seat at pod 3210D for the last time. I’m sad to be leaving, but I have learned so much while I’ve been here. (And I’m pretty excited to get back to UNC.)
My internship was with the digital media department. What is digital media, you may ask? Well, it wears many hats. Some call it new media or advanced media. Others hate those terms and prefer the “digital media” descriptor.
Basically, it involves creating Web content, distributing videos, budgeting web ad sales, maintaining the usability of the site, etc, etc…
The director of my department describes digital media as “interactive storytelling.” That has become my favorite way to describe what I did here. The digital media producers create content for natgeotv.com. They also manage video distribution content. That’s how any legit natgeo videos you may have seen on YouTube, Hulu, or MSN got there.
I mostly helped with creating content for the site. I made fact pages for upcoming premiers, cropped photos for photo galleries, created quiz content, and helped produce other site pages for the television shows.
This is a cable channel — so we try to get users to watch the television shows, but we also strive to produce interactive content that draws people in, makes them more connected and engaged with the site and with the shows, and teaches them something new or something they may not have seen in the 60-minute feature.
