"In New Yooooork! Concrete jungle where dreams are made of!"
Forgive the kitschy song lyrics... but seriously. NEW YORK IS AMAZING! (and yes, that song is like the unofficial city anthem up here, people play it all the time).
I should introduce myself: I'm Liz, just graduated from UNC, and I moved to NY June 1st for a paid internship with a startup news website, DNAinfo (everyone agrees - the name is terrible! people think we're some medical group who will analyze your DNA or something). And I love my job!
The way I got here is a story in itself. I actually found the internship on Tracy Boyer's blog, Innovative Interactivity - she updates the site with job and intern opportunities each month, I highly recommend checking it out! I applied for the job at DNA and they liked my stuff (I'm primarily a photojournalist, doing a lot of video work now too). And it also probably helped that the multimedia editor here is a UNC alum himself! So I flew up here one weekend - my first time ever to NYC! - for the interview, and now here I am.
I get to work on a "Best of the Block" project all summer, where I basically go to any block of the city I want and then interview 5-6 people who live and work there. I shoot photos, video and get audio (whatever works to tell the story best) then edit everything. Once all the videos/audio slideshows/etc are finished, they will be added to a map of the city streets, allowing you to take a "virtual tour" of that block. It's a pretty demanding project, but I'm basically getting paid to discover the city - which is awesome.
As for the website itself, it's hyper-local, community-based news. They cover daily celeb and breaking news, but the focus is telling stories from within each of Manhattan's little neighborhoods.
Anyway, my work hasn't been published yet, but that will soon change. I'll keep you all updated.
In the meantime... "NEEEEEW YOOOOORK!"
