Live from NYC

Hi everyone

This is my first blog post here, but I've enjoyed reading about everyone else's experiences thus far! My name is Lauryn D'Angelo and I am a 2009 graduate from the School of Journalism and, obviously, UNC. I'm from outside of Philadelphia, so I've always had my eyes set on moving back to the Northeast after college; NYC captured my heart years ago, though, and I knew that this was the place for me to be post-graduation.

I actually have a degree in advertising from the J-School, but right now I'm at Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., a magazine publishing company known for brands like ELLE, ELLEDECOR, ELLEGirl, Woman's Day, Car and Driver, Road and Track, Cycle World and, most recently, Glo (our new online venture with MSN). As of September 2009, I am an assistant in the digital department. I do a lot of "grunt work" like scheduling meetings and airfare for my bosses (one is VP of all digital media at HFM; the other is VP of Integrated Sales and Marketing) but because they are both really encouraging, amazing guys to work for, I've been granted many opportunities to work across all brands and with all kinds of people on various projects. Most recently I've been spending a significant portion of my time working with the marketing team for Glo, and just the other day I contributed to the Style 360 blog on elle.com. Other cool experiences in my 9 months here include attending three fashion shows during Fashion Week in February (The BeBe/Kardashian line, Walter, and Milan Breton), coming up with the winning name for our company's internal networking site, designing logos for Caroline Manzo's (of Real Housewives of NJ fame!) upcoming food line, watching The City drama unfold right down the hallway from where I sit (and looking for my friends, Kevin and Sebastian, the two camera guys for elle.com on TV!) and giving Robbie Myers, Editor In Chief of ELLE, directions to the bathroom on my floor. Seriously.

I took this job because after four months of searching, I already had an apartment in the city and I needed something. Anything. I cannot even begin to describe how fortunate I feel to be at such an interesting, growing, dynamic company, and how lucky I am that I've been able to gain so much hands on experience in so little time. I could go on and on about what I do and what makes HFM great, but I'll save that for additional blogposts! Feel free to e-mail me (lauryn.dangelo@gmail.com) if you have any questions or just want to say hi. Happy interning!
