SEO 101

Well, I made it through my first post-college week of work. Actually, it was also my first 40-hour week of work. Transitioning from classes to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday-Friday has been a little difficult. But I love my web copywriting internship for a marketing company so far and everyone there is really nice.

Part of that transition has been realizing what I don’t know about writing for the web, like SEO, which I thought I had a good grasp of, but found that I most definitely have more to learn about. So what is SEO? It’s basically a group of techniques used to help increase a website’s ranking so that it will appear higher in search results., to put it in the most simple terms possible.

Below are a few helpful resources on the matter that have helped me this past week:

1. SEOBook glossary: Aren’t sure what a long tail keyword is? Neither was I. This glossary has more terms than I could ever imagine and is easy to navigate.

2. Google Trends: Compare the popularity of search terms and look up hot searches by region. It’s helpful to check out before writing a blog post to determine what exact keywords may help your content appear higher in searches and attract more readers.

3. SeoMoz: This is just a general resource that has a ton of information. Granted, it may be a little more in-depth than what someone who’s new to SEO needs, but can provide further information to help you fake it until you actually know it.

I’m loving everyone else’s blog posts so far and remember that I’d love to chat with anyone about CAFME, journalism, magazines, bad reality TV and anything else along those lines!
