I knew before I went to UNC that I wanted to work in magazines, but I didn’t get involved in any campus publications my first two years. Then one night in the dining hall at the end of my fall semester sophomore year, I lamented that there were no student organizations for people who wanted to work in magazines. A person at my table told me about CAFME.
That night I e-mailed the president and started attending meetings religiously. At first I was intimidated by these college students that had longer resumes than most people have at retirement. But I knew two things for sure: CAFME was a perfect fit, and I was really behind on landing the magazine job of my dreams.
Since then I’ve interned at the Carrboro Free Press, Deep South Entertainment, the Independent Weekly and The Celebrity Cafe, became an editor at the Duke-UNC joint features magazine Rival and served as CAFME president this year. I’ve learned so much from past presidents and members of CAFME, and want to continue helping the organization after I graduate.
Ed2010 has also been an amazing resource. Entering the job market right now, especially in journalism, has been daunting and the biggest part of the process is learning what skills will make you a better job candidate. Just looking at Whisper Jobs and determining what skills I need to acquire has given me confidence in my ability to talk about programs that I have no experience with but am hoping to learn in the future.
As for this summer, I have a full-time web copywriting internship through the end of August at a marketing company in Charlotte. I hope to save up money, freelance, work on a portfolio website, find a full-time job in New York and move there in the fall.
I’m so excited to see what the future holds for CAFME and would love to hear from any members via Twitter or e-mail.
